What Net Delta Means

Delta = Buy market orders (aggressors lifting the offer) – Sell market orders (aggressors hitting the bid).

Net Delta shows who is in control at the bar/period level: buyers (positive delta) or sellers (negative delta).

Why a Net Delta Flip Matters

Shift in Aggressive Participation

  • A flip from negative to positive means selling pressure was dominant, but buyers stepped in aggressively and overpowered sellers.

  • A flip from positive to negative means buyers were in control, but sellers suddenly absorbed and overwhelmed them.

Momentum & Short-Term Trend Change

  • A flip often signals a shift in momentum — buyers taking control can spark rallies, sellers taking control can spark declines.

  • It’s not just about price moving, but who is driving that move.

Liquidity & Absorption Insights

  • Flips often occur near support/resistance levels where one side exhausts, and the other side seizes control.

  • Example: At support, sellers push price lower (negative delta), but buyers absorb and then flip delta positive → potential reversal.

Trap & Stop-Run Signals

  • A flip can also indicate trapped traders:

  • Negative → Positive flip: Shorts may be trapped, fueling a squeeze.

  • Positive → Negative flip: Longs may be trapped, accelerating selling.

Why Traders Watch It Closely

  • Helps confirm valid reversals vs. false moves.

  • Identifies who has conviction at turning points.

  • Provides early warning of trend continuation or exhaustion.

In short:

  • Negative → Positive flip = Buyers wrestled control from sellers (bullish signal).

  • Positive → Negative flip = Sellers wrestled control from buyers (bearish signal).

Here’s a chart example:

Bars colored Cyan indicate where net delta flipped from negative to positive, signaling buyers taking control. For confirmation, the price of the following bar must trade above the high of the flip bar.

Bars colored Magenta indicate where net delta flipped from positive to negative, signaling sellers taking control. For confirmation, the price of the following bar must trade below the low of the flip bar.

This illustrates how these flips often align with shifts in short-term momentum and can signal potential reversals or continuation points.

Below are trades that I recorded on 08/22/2025 and 08/25/2025 using the delta flip to take winning trades.
